Godstopper - Demo (2010)

Seriously, I can't stop listening to this at the moment. Its grimy hooks are buried in my brain, yanking away, screaming for me to listen. Godstopper exist in a strange realm where Swans had a love child with Ween and this demo is the outcome of that sordid night. The weird, mid range sludge of the guitars seems at odds with the very melodic "rock" of the vocals at times but in this world they work perfectly together. The suffocating, claustrophobic, lo-fi production only adds to the general air of grime and filth which in turn makes the vocal patterns leap out from the mix. I really have struggled at trying to describe this to people so I will just leave it here for your to understand yourselves..

Big Black - Live at The Cafe Voltaire (1987)

Awesome live recording that captures Big Black's caustic sound and also Albini's caustic wit from a 1987 show in Milwaukee. I would use the term greatest hits to describe the set list but it feels redundant to use that term with Big Black, instead lets say its the best mixtape you could think up to give to someone to educate them on this amazing band.

Sigh - Ghastly Funeral Theatre (1997)

Need to get back on the blog trail. A catalogue of life fails and problems have persisted recently. The bonus is I have managed to stock pile some good stuff for future posting.
The first will be this '97 offering from Japan's Sigh, the avant garde black metal group that have been confusing and alienating thicky metallers for over a decade. From the early black/thrash output on  Deathlike Silence ( you know ran that don't you?) right up to today's genre spanning amalgamation, they have always seemed to follow what ever the hell they fancied doing. I do remember the rumour that 2005's Gallows Gallery album used sonic warfare equipment perfected by the Japanese military in WWII to harm the listener. Sadly that was just a daft rumour to disguise the crap production job.
Ghastly Funeral Theatre marked a definitive change in the bands evolution. The Celtic Frost like guitar worship is still here but tempered and with an equal amount of keyboard and piano tinkling. Huge orchestral swathes of them open and close the album while the track Imiuta separates the more metal elements with a further piano interlude. Throw in a ton of folk and odd, almost classic rock moments and you have Ghastly Funeral Theatre. You might be thinking you have heard keyboard driven black metal far to much before and in all fairness I wrote this off first time around. I remember the album Hail Horror Hail in the same year, more for its striking cover art, receiving quite a bit of press. This EP and that album are where Sigh began to get interesting for me.

Breach - It's Me God (1997)

Solid gold, bulletproof classic. The dark, Swedish hardcore machine known as Breach have never really set a foot wrong. This album is my favourite and one of my biggest influences. I couldn't ever really describe how good this is, just get it listened to.

Gone - Lets Get Gone Real Gone For A Change (1986)

From the dope addled mind of Black Flag and SST head honcho, Greg Ginn, came Gone back in '86. A vehicle for his complete wig out, free-jazz obsessed, hippy rock dreams. This is early 70's stadium jams transposed to 1980's van tours and shitty basements. Its awesome. I have always been a fan of Flag's "The Process Of Weeding Out" and after watching the Reality 86'd documentary I was reminded of how much fun this record is. So I dug it out, spun it in the car to work a few times this week and am sharing it here now. Bonus note, until recently I had no idea it was the almighty rhythm section of Andrew Weiss and Sim Cain. YES!

Bronson multi post

The legend himself, Charles Bronson. This post has come about from an in joke amongst myself and no one else at my place of work. I have spent nearly 3 weeks signing in as Charles Bronson on the safety check list. I don't really know why, one morning it came to me, no one has corrected or mentioned it, so its just carried on. Despite this massive safety flaw someone has since, written their name as Ben Dover. Only the once mind.

So, in honor of my employers slacks safety practises and in tribute to one of the best badasses to ever stalk cinema ( and also because I have been going through the archives, I needed to re-upload a bunch of things.) I have put together a load of Charlie B related musical things. A Charles Bronson bargain bucket if you will.

You should already know who these guys are. Classic, bratty sounding, 90s, hardcore/power violence dudes. To clever for their own good. Enjoy a movie/documentary that came with this compilation here.

2. Herbie Hancock - Death Wish OST

 Get it

The score to Micheal Winners vigilante classic. Often imitated, never bettered. Hancock created an impressive foreboding atmosphere with this one. perfectly suited to Charles Bronson dealing out street justice to Jeff Goldblum, Lawrence Fishburne ( when he was still cool) and all the other punks in his way.

3. Fister - Bronsonic

Some nasty, feedback encrusted sludge from over the pond. Sorta like Eyehategod crossed with The Butthole Surfers. Been digging this for some time now. The band are giving it away free as it seems the physical copies have sold out. Well worth a listen if you like.
