Roy Budd - Get Carter OST (1971)

In 1971, Mike Hodges released the seminal, British crime flick, Get Carter. It divided opinion and suffered somewhat due to the declining interest in the British film industry as well as the amoral approach and attitude of Michael Caine's Jack Carter.

Its a great film. Its nasty and gritty, plenty of violence and just the right amount of nudity needed in any revenge film. Allegedly Mike Hodges only had £450 to spend on a score. In steps British jazz musician Roy Budd. Working with only three other musicians, Budd created the perfect jazzy accompaniment to Carter's violent investigation around the Newcastle underworld. Often imitated never bettered. here you go.

80 Blocks From Tiffany's (1979)

Too good not to share. Really interesting documentary about street gangs in the 80's. Primarily around the Bronx area. Everyone knows gangs are cool. Especially with names like Nomads and Savage Skulls. Back in the days when everyone wore denim and leather. The Warriors got nothing on these dudes........

Toadliquor - The Hortator's Lament (2003)

Having spent all weekend under the influence of illness, I have fallen back on my usual tactic of getting over any bug or virus. Its a very simple but effective policy. Bombard your insides with all manner of drugs and potions, watch horrible revenge films like The Horseman, Dead Mans Shoe's and The Embodiment Of Evil and listen to twisted, horrible music. Of which, Toadliquor is most certainly very horrible indeed. Eschewing the melodic aspect of a lot of other doom, these Californian oddballs instead layered so much filth and noise on top of the standard doom framework and in doing so created one of the most claustrophobic and horrible things ever, ( I usually hate using overly dramatic phrases but in the case of this its justified ) an album that makes you want to have a bath after its finished. You do feel like you have just been wading through some industrial quality sewage.

Neurosis - Children Of The Grave (1999)

Today has been shit. This is what its about. Taken from the split 7" with Soilent Green. Hydra Head put out a series of them. Each band covering a Sabbath track, later to be released as a compilation. Now out of print. This tune towered above everything else on it.

Get involved.

Harvey Lawrence Pekar October 8, 1939 – July 12, 2010 RIP

For someone who hated life he had a very good time I reckon. Do yourself a favour and start reading American Splendour, then Our Cancer Year and watch the film adaptation.
He's probably complaining to god about storage for his records in heaven right now.

RIP Harvey

Worship - Unreleased 12" (2009)

A very recent find. This band don't exist anymore. They recorded this final album and then disappeared, presumed dead. I imagine there is a completely normal reason for this but I like my creepy version instead. Its hardcore but with a massive doom and Entombed obsession. And before you say it, yes. Just like Cursed. A friend described its appeal as "for people that get hard over Cursed". Which is simple enough really. If you miss the Canadian juggernaut then give Worship a toot.

Volition - Demo 2006

Crushing, tar thick, death afflicted doom from a quiet town. Back in the days when you used to contact other metallers by actual written mail, my drummer was in contact with Volition's guitarist Jas. Awesome guy. He set Narcosis up playing in Barrow in the upstairs room of a social club. We snuck in our own booze and got drunk watching Volition slow it all down. They have a album and a pretty sweet split with Unearthly Trance available as well.

Crushing!
